Dramatically Increasing a Patent's Valuation through Innovative Mapping

Increasing patent valuation through innovative mapping

Client Challenge:

Our client, a prominent patent licensing company, faced a challenge with multiple patents mapped for infringement on Wi-Fi 6. Previous attempts by their tech teams failed to achieve successful mapping. They needed a strong technical team that could effectively map the patent claims to another technical application area, specifically in 5G, to increase the value of their patents significantly.

What Lumenci Offered:

Understanding the client's requirements, Lumenci provided potential mappings on adaptive Forward Error Correction technology within the 5G domain. This involved an in-depth study spanning over 50 pages and ten sub-sections, analyzing five different technical specification documents related to 5G NR. In addition, our telecom specialist combined a deep understanding of 5G with out-of-the-box thinking which proved instrumental in this process.

Creative Approach and Technical Expertise:

The mapping process was far from straightforward or obvious. Our team creatively interpreted the claim limitation by identifying indicators of the buffer size state rather than directly reading the data, utilizing the concept of the New Data Indicator (NDI) in CBG-based transmission. This required a comprehensive understanding of 5G and innovative thinking to achieve a successful mapping.

Utilization of Lumenci's Work:

The client found Lumenci's technical work to be highly resourceful throughout the entire matter. We were the first technical team capable of solving this complex mapping challenge within the intricate and emerging 5G field, compliant with 3GPP standard specifications. The client used our technical analysis and claim charts to showcase the quality and impact of their patent portfolio, facilitating their licensing and sale-related discussions.

Positive Outcome for the Client:

As a result of our work, the client now has the advantage of multiple options for infringement readings for the patent. It successfully maps to two prominent standards: Wi-Fi 6 and 5G, significantly enhancing the value of the patent and enabling more effective monetization opportunities.

Broadening R&D Perspective:

This case study highlights the importance of expanding the R&D strategy beyond focusing on a single technology standard. It emphasizes the benefits of leveraging multiple technology standards. In industries such as digital media, patenting strategies should encompass not only becoming a standard but also belonging to multiple standard formats.

Aligning Patenting Strategy with R&D:

A firm's patenting strategy should align with its R&D activities, enabling it to set technological standards or promptly meet established ones. Additionally, when multiple technological standards coexist, a firm's ability to join various standards can significantly influence the royalty revenue of its patents by providing access to a larger pool of licensees.

Lumenci's Dedication to Client Requirements:

Throughout this success story, Lumenci demonstrated an understanding of the client's needs and provided potential mappings based on adaptive Forward Error Correction technology within the 5G domain. Our in-depth study and out-of-the-box thinking, with support from our telecom specialist, ensured a creative interpretation that aligned with the relevant specification.
